Supporting Learners that are Non-Verbal

When we describe a student as “non-verbal” it is important that we do not interpret this as “unable to communicate.” In this module, we will discuss what it means to be non-verbal, the importance of functional communication, and principles on how to support children that are non-verbal.

Please note, that we will not be discussing any assistive or alternative systems for functional communication (ex. PECS, Proluoquo2Go), as children can use a variety of assistive technologies. Instead, we will be looking at broader concepts in how to support the success of these systems.
